C Train Storage Project Phase 4

6 Inch Cylinders Honey. 6 Inches!

Maintenance gave us a 3 inch diameter piece of PVC pipe that we are cutting into 6 inch sections to hold our safety goggles. YAY!!!

The PVC is not easy to cut through.

They have to be sanded too.

C Train Storage Project Phase 3

Daphne is beginning the Big Pegboard Installation.

Sal is completing the the Big Pegboard Installation.

By the End of Period 4, we already had saws and a rafter's square on the pegboard.

Then later in the day, we installed the small pegboard underneath the white board. Here are the plans:

And here is the final product:

Garden Landscape Changes

This is a great picture, it shows the table, the tower and the composter all in one shot.

We do quite a bit of re-arranging throughout the year, and one of the things we had to do was to remove the strawberries from the shallow planter box and put them into individual pots. Here is a shot of the strawberries getting uprooted.

Plant Inventory

So I've been thinking about how we can incorporate graphs into our garden project. Here is what I have come up with:

Categorize the plants we have in our greenhouse, line them up like a gigantic bar graph, and then count them and make a bar graph.
Here are some pictures of that activity:

Line up the plants by category and get the graph paper ready:

Count the plants and make the graph.

The next steps are... Math teachers, if you have any ideas, comment below!

Side note:
Just kind of a cool shot from the view of the Weather Station.

The Multi-Purpose Table

Chris and a few other students built this table last year. I took it to my house over the summer and used it in my own backyard while our C Train was installed. I brought it back and we buried the legs in the ground, at this point, it is an excellent planting table. My daughter had spray painted some things on the table over the summer, that is why it is pink and purple.

The table is back and ready for action!

Gabriel's Art

Gabriel wants to sell his paintings, and we are in the middle of trying to organize how to do that. Here are the paintings getting glued onto posterboard.

And here they are on my wall as we try to figure out how to market them.

Smoothies

We have been growing Kale in our garden, and then making Apple/Kale juice. We then freeze the juice and at a later date make smoothies with the cold concoction.

Enjoying Smoothies made partly from ingredients grown in our garden.

As you are walking around in our kitchen area, you might run in to these guys.

But you don't have to fear them, just offer them some smoothie and strike up a fun conversation.

C Train Storage Project Phase 2

Nick and I installed the first pegboard panel. Then we drew up these plans:

Different students throughout the day helped with continuing this Storage Project, but sadly none of the pictures I took turned out. We kept drawing schematics for the next steps,

and continued to measure, cut, drill, and screw the wood. At the end of Wednesday, the shed looked like this:

The Composter

We decided we needed a good composting system. Mr. McKee and I had been trying to compost leaves and grass clippings, but we didn't really have a good system. Then he found the plans online for a really nice composter, and we set to work once the lumber came in.
First we practiced in his classroom.

Then, we took the operation outside.

The project grew and started to take shape

The composter spent a few days out on the concrete.

When we were done with the chicken wire, we started building the slats for the front of the composter.

Then we could see that it was starting to look nice.

Turning it the right way showed us how it was going to work.

And here it is with it's first batch of leaves and grass clippings.

Moving the Tower Planter and Drifting

We needed to move the Tower Planter, so I asked Jose to bring the forklift. He agreed, but the ground was pretty loose, so the forklift got stuck. Luckily, Paul brought the 4x4 John Deere. You mess with the Deere, you get the antlers!
The planter was here:

But we needed it to go under the greenhouse. You can see how loose the soil is!

We got some video of pulling out the forklift!

And a little more footage...

C Train Storage Project Phase 1

We start the plans with talking, then make a sketch. Then we make our dreams come true in real life.
The original plans, with ideas from Mr. Howard

The STUDS:

Zach made these stud ends in welding class. They are rock-solid!

Our first sketches turned out to be just a fantasy. They looked like this:
